Windows Cert Changes in the Upcoming Update

The upcoming major update of AudioNodes is around the corner. As part of this update, we are also switching the certificate issuer used for the Windows installer, which might cause SmartScreen warnings on Windows systems. Take a quick look to understand what this means if you are a Windows user.

Windows Certificate Changes

The upcoming 0.12.0 major update’s Windows installer is signed with a new certificate from a new certificate issuer, Certum. The old installers (up until version 0.11.4) used Sectigo. As part of this change, if you are a Windows user, you might see a SmartScreen warning saying “Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognised app from starting”.

This will happen both when you install AudioNodes manually (i.e. a fresh download), as well as during the next auto-update.

This is normal, because the certificate is new and is not yet “known enough” to Microsoft (this’ll automatically go away in time). It looks like this:

Fixing the Windows protected your PC warning

To get past this warning:

  1. Click More Info
  2. Optional: take a quick look at the publisher to verify it says AudioNodes LLC at the end
  3. Click Run Anyway

After that, you shouldn’t be seeing this again.

Update Sneak Peek

Even outside the certificate issuer change, this will be a major update in general. It redesigns the main layout of AudioNodes and expands the existing Patcher/Timeline split-screen concept to also cover the main UI of some Nodes, notably the Piano Roll Node.

This means you can have the Piano Roll and the Timeline open side-by-side — vertically — like this:

Additionally, the update will contain several major changes, including:

  • A major Piano Roll Node facelift and important fixes
  • An early version of a profile system concept, where you can showcase a collection of your work and link to your other sites (including SoundCloud and YouTube channels if you have them)
  • Important bugfixes, including some high priority fixes around constant folding and audio file storage
  • New experimental Nodes
  • The ability to edit basic data about snippets & custom Nodes (description and title) — this is a pre-cursor to being able to fully edit them (including the patch itself), but that’s not quite there yet

The update is expected to be available in roughly a week, so thanks and stay tuned!
